Youth Work

Intent

The intent of Youth Work is promote, encourage and facilitate the physical, mental, social education and development of our young people by providing informal education, life skills and development opportunities for them. Youth workers at Educate U should plan and lead exciting bespoke projects in the community with our vulnerable young people.

Implementation

Youth workers will plan and lead exciting projects in the local community working 1-2-1 with a child or young person with special educational needs and

  • A child or young person identified at risk of school refusal or with poor attendance.
  • A child that cannot manage a fuller academic timetable.
  • A child or young person with low motivation and/or low aspirations
  • A child or young person with low emotional wellbeing.

Generally, the youth worker will work with a child for an AM or PM session once a week.
The youth worker will need to plan the activities based around any of the following:

  • The child/young person’s interests
  • The child’s needs identified in the child’s EHCP
  • ASDAN
  • PSHE
  • Personal Development
  • Topic based learning in the classroom

The EHCP, ASDAN and/or PSHE might be used as a more thematic approach to provide a framework to plan activities. Sometimes, the developed skills are intersectional and so through interest led work, photographs might be taken as part of ASDAN evidence and photos uploaded to Earwig, the school’s IEP / EHCP monitoring system to show evidence against IEP targets.

Outcome

Our children have a developed set of skills which improve their personal development, social skills, communication and Interaction and their overall physical health. Through positive youth work experiences, and close connection with the youth worker, children and young people will feel enjoyment in gaining levels of independence and successful in their progress. In turn, this will increase resilience and aid for transition into a full-time classroom based education. The time-scale for this is bespoke to each child or young person.
