Religious Education

At Educate U, our Religious Education (RE) curriculum is carefully designed to align with our current curriculum offering at Educate U. We are committed to providing a comprehensive, academically rigorous, and respectful RE education to children and young people aged 5 -16, all of whom have an EHCP.

Intent

Grounded in Academic Study: We ensure that what is taught and learned in RE is firmly grounded in academic study. Our curriculum maintains high expectations for scholarship, preventing students from developing misconceptions about religion and non-religion. We emphasise the importance of basing our teachings on well-established knowledge alongside our curriculum offerings across each subject area.

Covering Content Collectively: Our RE curriculum prioritises covering substantive content and concepts collectively, rather than skimming the surface of excessive content. We aim to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the place of religion and non-religion in the world, ensuring that they can grasp the bigger picture.

Well-Sequenced Curriculum: We understand the importance of a well-sequenced curriculum, particularly when addressing sensitive and controversial topics. We prepare our students with the prior knowledge, including content, concepts, and vocabulary, necessary for engaging with these subjects thoughtfully.

Learning Ways of Knowing: Our approach to RE education aligns with Ofsted's recommendation for teaching students 'ways of knowing' specific to different content. This approach enables students to critically analyse beliefs, interpret religious texts, and evaluate arguments, thereby preventing over-simplification and stereotyping while promoting a diversity of perspectives.

Implementation

Structured Lessons: Lessons are planned to ensure a logical progression, beginning with foundational knowledge of major world religions and non-religious beliefs, moving towards more complex theological and philosophical debates. This structure helps students connect new knowledge with what they already know, enhancing comprehension and retention.

Diverse Teaching Methods: We employ a variety of teaching methods, including direct instruction, discussion-based learning, and project work. These methods cater to the varied learning needs and styles of our students, all of whom have an EHCP, ensuring accessibility and engagement.

Regular Assessments and Feedback: Students are assessed regularly through both formative and summative assessments. Feedback is provided promptly to guide student learning and inform subsequent instruction.

Impact

The impact of our Religious Education curriculum is profound and multi-faceted, reflecting our commitment to fostering an inclusive, informed, and respectful school community.

Enhanced Cultural Literacy: Students leave Educate U with a deep understanding of various religious and non-religious perspectives, enabling them to appreciate cultural diversity and complexity. This understanding is crucial in today’s globalised world and promotes social harmony.

Critical Thinking Skills: Our curriculum encourages students to engage critically with various beliefs and practices. By analysing, comparing, and contrasting different viewpoints, students develop strong critical thinking and analytical skills, preparing them for further education and diverse workplace environments.

Respectful Dialogue: Through guided discussions and collaborative projects, students learn to express their ideas respectfully and consider the views of others. This fosters an environment of mutual respect and dialogue, which is essential for personal and community development.

Preparation for Global Citizenship: By understanding the role of religion and beliefs in shaping world events and personal identities, our students are better prepared to act as informed and respectful global citizens. They are equipped to contribute positively to a world that values diversity and inclusivity.

Our RE curriculum not only meets academic standards but also plays a critical role in shaping the character and future opportunities of our students, ensuring they are well-prepared to navigate and contribute to a diverse and interconnected world.
