 Intent

At Educate U we aim to deliver a comprehensive PSHE curriculum that is inclusive, accessible and places our pupils at the centre of their own learning. Our PSHE curriculum has been developed in line with our whole school curriculum intent to deliver a broad, relevant and engaging curriculum. Our PSHE curriculum encompasses our school values to maintain a safe and effective programme of learning in an environment that is carefully tailored to meet the individual needs of our pupils.

  • Safety
  • Trust
  • Choice
  • Collaboration
  • Empowerment

Careful considerations are made to ensure an effective trauma informed approach is taken to support pupil wellbeing whilst equipping them with knowledge and skills to prepare them for prosperous futures. Through collaborative working we provide our pupils with appropriate content to support them in developing knowledge and understanding as well as skills to be healthy, safe, and prepared for modern life to the best of their abilities.

Our curriculum has been designed in line with the PSHE Associations planning framework for pupils with SEND to ensure that content is accessible for all students at Educate U.

Our Curriculum covers the following key areas:

  • Self-Awareness
  • Self-care, support and safety
  • Managing feelings
  • Changing and growing
  • Healthy lifestyles
  • The world in which I live.

The curriculum is modified and adapted to ensure our students are comfortable and confident in accessing the content and areas are re-visited to re-enforce and consolidate learning whilst additional support is in place across the school to promote physical, social, and emotional understanding.

Ensuring that our students feel positive about themselves and the world in which they live is of paramount importance and we provide support and guidance for our pupils based on the foundations of positive and trusting relationships.

 Implementation

Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2

One core theme will be covered every half term to prepare pupils for life, assisting them in Developing the knowledge, skills, and attributes to enable them to develop resilience and make informed decisions about their safety, wellbeing, health, and relationships, both now and in their futures.

Teachers will use a wide range of trauma informed teaching approaches and resources to effectively deliver content that is suited to our pupils and effective CPD will be provided to ensure that high levels of confidence and knowledge are maintained.

Opportunities for PSHE-linked visits will be planned for with visits from guest speakers and organisations in the local community (emergency services). This also includes themed days/events, such as Anti-Bullying Week.

Cross-curricular links will be imbedded which will allow for pupils to deepen their understand of PSHE across the curriculum, including using technology safely.

Discussion is placed at the heart of PSHE lessons and supports pupils in developing their confidence in becoming active and informed citizens through sharing their opinions and reflections whilst ensuring that they maintain high aspirations and belief in themselves.

In KS1 and KS2 Teachers assessment of knowledge, skills and understanding is made through observations during lessons, verbal feedback and pupil voice which is recorded in a summary of each PSHE lesson and may include samples of the work completed in the lesson (including photos of practical work), a blurb to contextualise the learning and evidence of pupil voice as well as pupil reflections.

At Educate U in key stages 3 and 4 pupils will build on and extend their previous knowledge and understanding through a broad scheme of work in line with the PSHE Associations planning framework for pupils with SEND to ensure sequential learning and to promote the development of healthy and confident citizens.

We believe that focusing on developing a 'Growth Mindset' in our children will support them in building resilience, independence and confidence whilst equipping them to embrace challenge; foster a love of learning; and increase their motivation and happiness.
