History

Impact

At EducateU, we strive to inspire curiosity in our children across all key stages when they are learning about where they have come from and how past events and significant people from the past have helped to shape their future.

Our History curriculum has been developed in line with our whole school curriculum intent to deliver a broad, relevant and engaging curriculum. Its purpose is to present a broad knowledge and understanding. Within this there will be aspects of depth study, storytelling, enquiry, and thematic study.

We aim to inspire a life-long love of History; to develop passionate historians and independent learners who seek further knowledge, ask questions, and think critically. We hope to develop student understanding and develop their ability to make links and connections to other topics and subject areas.

Through our studies we aim to develop our children’s empathy, their moral compass and a greater understanding of their own choices and responsibilities as members of a community and diverse society.

We want our students to be able to communicate enthusiastically and knowledgably about the past and aim to develop high levels of written and verbal communication, as well as the confidence to argue their points convincingly.

By developing these vital skills our intent is to enable our children to succeed as they move through education as well a better understanding of the world they are growing up in.

Implementation

Our history curriculum will begin with lower primary children learning about their own history, the world above them, under them, and around them. As they progress through the primary phase children will investigate how their environment and natural resources were utilized by early civilisations which can be traced through to the modern day.

Our secondary children will develop skills learnt in the primary phase to enrich their understanding of historical events through sport, the world of work, music and fashion and Identify, Celebrations, and Diversity. They will also discover how historical events have impacted our modern way of living.

We will also encourage students to visit new places. It is our vision to ensure each child is offered the chance to visit places of historical interest when appropriate to support and enrich their learning. These trips will enable children to place physical objects/sites in a realistic setting, furthering knowledge of the world in which we live but also their own place within it.

History Impact Statement

History is delivered by high quality first teaching which promotes the love of learning which will be monitored through internal data throughout each term. Teachers are supported in History by the subject lead who will ensure that all lessons are planned to be accessible and engaging for all of our children with SEND, and that reasonable adjustments have been made to ensure that all can access the History curriculum. From the outset, staff will regularly monitor children’s progress throughout each term for History.

Expected progress will differ from pupil to pupil according to ability and need but staff will record Working Towards (WT) expected level, Working At (WA) expected level and Working Beyond (WB) expected level relevant to skills and knowledge demonstrated by a pupil relevant to their ability and needs.

There will also be challenge for those who are able. A variety of learning styles/activities are utilised during lessons appropriate to the pupil being taught and the composite of knowledge that is being taught. History lessons will also underpin our school values through social and moral questions.

Through our history curriculum, our children will develop an enriched understanding of the past world around them, near and far. They will be able to critically reflect as historians by challenging opinions against facts, skills which will be transferable to other curriculum areas.
